Assam to become 'laboratory' for mother tongue based education in India

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled plans to make the state of Assam a laboratory for a unique caste, tribe and language-based education system. He said, the Government of India will give priority to every resource required for this.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the North-East Education Conclave 2021 in Guwahati, the Union Minister said that 180 languages have been included in all the northeastern states together - making Assam a major state in the region ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the major base for implementing the new educational measures. The diversity of languages cannot be seen well better than the Northeast region, with about 180 languages spoken by the tribes living there.

Talking of Assam, the Union Education Minister said that it may be the only state in India that spends six per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on education.
