Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma, 11 other MLAs join TMC
In a major setback to the Congress, former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and 11 other MLAs joined the Trinamool Congress in Meghalaya. With this move 12 out of 17, Congress MLAs joined Trinamool.
The development will come as a boost for TMC in the Northeast. This comes a month after Rahul Gandhi met former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and the party's state president Vincent H Pala over their demands and efforts to bridge the rift ahead of the elections. With the latest political development, Trinamool Congress has now become the main opposition party in the House of Meghalaya, despite not winning a single seat in the 2018 assembly elections.
Former Meghalaya chief minister Sangma was said to be upset over the appointment of Vincent H. Pala as state Congress president. With the exit of Mukul Sangma and 12 others today, the Congress is reduced to single digits in the region.
